- Companies Will NEVER Ask for Payment by Gift Card
What You Need to Know
Gift card scams exploit fear and urgency to trick victims into handing over their money. Scammers pose as government officials, utility companies, or even tech support agents, claiming that you owe a fine or bill that must be paid immediately. To create a sense of panic, they warn of dire consequences—such as legal action or service disconnection—if payment is not made right away.
Unlike legitimate businesses, scammers insist that you pay using gift cards, often specifying which type to buy and where to purchase them. They may even stay on the phone while you go to the store, ensuring you don’t have time to think critically or ask for advice. Once the scammer receives the gift card number and PIN, the money is gone, often without any way to recover it.
What You Should Do
- Explain that no government agency or business will ever demand payment via gift cards.
- Encourage them to be skeptical of urgent financial requests, especially from unknown callers or messages.
- Make it clear that gift cards should only be used for personal purchases or as gifts—not for payments.
- If a child or relative is asked to buy a gift card for any unusual reason, they should check with a trusted adult first.
- Be cautious of unsolicited calls, texts, or emails asking for money.
- If a family member is contacted by someone claiming to be from the government or a company, verify the request by calling the official customer service number.
- Immediately report the scam to the gift card company—some may be able to help recover lost funds.
- File a report with the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) at ReportFraud.ftc.gov to help track scammers and prevent future fraud.
- If personal information was shared, consider freezing your credit to prevent identity theft.
