- Hertz Data Breach Exposes Customer Private Data
What You Need to Know
A recent data breach involving Hertz, Dollar, and Thrifty car rental companies compromised sensitive customer information through a third-party vendor, Cleo Communications. The breach occurred from October to December 2024 but was only recently disclosed. Exposed data includes names, contact details, birth dates, driver’s license and Social Security numbers, and credit card information. This type of personal data can be used by criminals to commit identity theft and financial fraud.
What You Should Do
If you rented from Hertz, Dollar, or Thrifty, take these actions to protect yourself:
Freeze Your Credit: Prevent new accounts from being opened in your name by placing a credit freeze with all three major bureaus:
Monitor Credit Reports Weekly: Visit AnnualCreditReport.com to check for suspicious activity. It’s free and safe.
Check Your Credit Card Statements: Look for unauthorized charges and report them immediately.
Use Free Credit Monitoring: Call Hertz at 866-408-8964 to enroll in their two years of free credit monitoring.
Stay Alert for Scams: Don’t give personal info to unsolicited callers or messages claiming to be from Hertz. Avoid clicking unknown links or downloading files in emails or texts unless verified.
