What You Need to Know
Cyber criminals try to take advantage of natural disasters, and with both Hurricane Helene and Milton the risk is as great as ever. The types of scams target both people who need assistance and people trying to provide it.
Scammers often imitate the names of charities linked to the disaster and contact you through social media, email and text messages to donate. These fraudsters also can impersonate government officials in their communications, offering disaster relief in exchange for money or personal data.
What You Should Do
- Don’t share your card information over the phone with unknown callers, or in response to emails and text messages from “victims” of the recent natural disasters.
- Donate to charities that are legitimate and will help victims in the affected areas. Verify the charity with resources such as https://www.charitynavigator.org/ before donating.
- For those in the storm affected areas, remember only scammers will insist you pay for services by wire transfer, gift card, payment app, cryptocurrency, or in cash.
