- Geek Squad Phishing Email Scam
What You Need to Know
Scammers are impersonating Geek Squad, a well-known tech support service from Best Buy, to trick consumers into providing personal information. These phishing scams typically involve fraudulent emails that appear to be Geek Squad invoices, claiming that a payment has been made or is due.
The goal of these emails is to provoke a reaction—often prompting the recipient to call the phone number provided in the message to dispute the charge. However, these phone numbers do not connect to Geek Squad. Instead, they lead directly to scammers who will attempt to steal personal and financial information under the guise of verifying or canceling the fraudulent charge.
A key red flag of these phishing attempts is the lack of personalization—many of these emails do not include the recipient’s name, relying instead on generic greetings. Additionally, scammers may use email addresses and phone numbers that do not match the legitimate Geek Squad customer service contacts.
What You Should Do
- Do Not Click on Links or Open Attachments – Phishing emails often contain malicious links or attachments that can install malware on your device or lead to fake websites designed to steal login credentials.
- Verify Contact Information – If you receive an email claiming to be from Geek Squad, do not use the phone number or links provided in the message. Instead, visit Best Buy’s official website or call the verified customer service number (800-433-5778).
- Look for Warning Signs – Generic greetings, grammatical errors, unfamiliar sender addresses, and urgent language pressuring you to act quickly are common indicators of a phishing attempt.
- Never Provide Personal Information Over the Phone – If you call the number provided in a suspicious email, scammers may ask for your Social Security number, bank details, or login credentials. Legitimate companies will never ask for sensitive information in this manner.
- Use Email Security Features – Enable spam filters and phishing protection on your email account to reduce the likelihood of these messages reaching your inbox.
- Report Suspicious Emails – If you receive a phishing email impersonating Geek Squad, report it to Best Buy and the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) to help prevent further scams.
