- Don’t Get Tricked by Impersonation Scams
What You Need to Know
Trust impersonation scams are simply any scam where the scammer is trying to impersonate somebody important and authoritative. The most common types are government figures, tax agents, or even public figures like senators.
These scammers will attempt to dupe you by promising money, refunds, grants, or even by asking you to verify charges or fees you “owe” them. Of course, these types of officials will not contact random people via email or social media in this manner, so you should be aware of what to look out for.
What You Should Do
- It’s not urgent, even if they say it is. Stopping to take a breath and rethink the situation will often help you realize it’s fake.
- Double-check before pulling the trigger. Before engaging further or sending them any personal information, be sure to double check the source is legitimate.
- Pay attention to anything “sketchy”. Bad grammar, unprofessional language, and other inconsistencies are indicative of a scammy source. Don’t trust any “government” official who can’t even form a proper sentence.
