What You Need to Know

Imagine receiving a text message claiming you need to update your address to ensure a package delivery. The message includes a link that, when clicked, takes you to a website asking for personal information to “confirm” the delivery. It seems simple enough, but in reality, this is a scam designed to steal your sensitive data.

Scammers use this method to exploit trust and urgency, tricking victims into willingly handing over personal details like names, email addresses, and phone numbers. These basic details may seem harmless, but they provide cybercriminals with enough information to launch more targeted attacks. For instance, they could use your email and phone number to impersonate a legitimate organization and request further sensitive details, such as your credit card information or Social Security number. These scams not only compromise your personal data but can also lead to financial loss and identity theft if left unchecked.

What You Should Do

  • Never click on the link in the message. Scammers can create fake looking websites or pages to solidify their legitimacy while also making it difficult for you to be able to know if the page is real or fake.
  • Check the phone number or from where the message was sent from. More often than not the sender is a very suspicious looking email which will verify it is a scam.
  • When in doubt, go to the source. If you are waiting for a package to be delivered from Amazon, FedEx, USPS, or other, then call the source and they will verify and confirm any information you have about your package.
