- PayPal Invoice Billing Scam
What You Need to Know
Invoice scams are among the most prevalent types of fraud, thriving in the age of email communication. Scammers often craft convincing fake invoices, impersonating reputable companies like PayPal, to deceive recipients into making payments or contacting a fraudulent “support team” to resolve the supposed issue.
In some cases, scammers take their deception further by creating counterfeit websites that closely mimic legitimate ones, with only minor differences in the URL. These subtle changes can be hard to notice. The scam typically preys on your reaction to the shock of seeing a large invoice—leading you to quickly search the email for customer support details. By doing so, you unknowingly follow the path the scammer has set to ensnare you.
What You Should Do
- Avoid Clicking on Links or Calling Numbers in the Email: if you receive an invoice or email that appears to come from a legitimate source like PayPal, do not click on any links or call the phone numbers provided in the message.
- Be Aware of Suspicious Customer Service Behavior: Legitimate customer service lines, like PayPal’s, often require navigating through multiple prompts before connecting you with a representative.
- Do Not Grant Remote Access to Your Computer: Scammers may ask for remote access under the guise of resolving an issue. Avoid granting access unless you are certain the request is from a verified and legitimate source.
- Inspect the Email Address and URL Carefully: Hover over links in the email to preview the URL before clicking; if the URL looks suspicious or doesn’t match the official website, do not click it.
