What You Need to Know

With the flurry of holidays here, so are the scams. This is a time of giving to charitable causes. During this period, you will likely be contacted by various organizations seeking donations, especially those claiming to support our brave police officers and firefighters. Unfortunately, many of these solicitations may be from scammers attempting to fraudulently collect money under false pretenses.

Whether you are contacted by phone or email, it can be difficult to verify the legitimacy of the request. While you may be on the Federal Do Not Call List, charities are still legally allowed to contact you, making it challenging to determine whether the call is genuine. Similarly, when receiving text messages or email solicitations for donations, there is no way to be certain if they are from a legitimate charity or a scam.

What You Should Do

  • If you receive an email, text, or call, there is no way to tell who is contacting you. Go to the source. Scammers can change their Caller ID to impersonate who they wish.
  • Go to charitynavigator.org where you can discover which charities are scam and which are real. The website will also tell you how much of your donation will actually go towards your cause.
  • If possible, donate in person. The best way to know your money is going to the right charity such as your Fire Department or Police, then call or visit to donate.
